2D Animation: Zed (part 4)

13/04/16

Flat colored Zed, animated and everything. Now I only have to put her through After Effects. She looks very jiggly, but that's something I'll have to learn how to fix. And how to keep the animation and expressions smooth. It's a little out of time, but that's probably because I spent too long trying to animate the lisp. I still need to practice drawing hands in different positions, and keeping everything consistent.

Summative 1: Presentation of Story (Part 3)

Development:

Protagonist Mingxia:

Jaakko:

Jianquo.

Summative 1: Presentation of Story (part 2)

Development.

Decided to keep Mingxia's hair short and wavy, taking after a more Greek look. Also made her features a bit gentler, but also with more character. Using a Disney, cartoon-y look.

By keeping her transformation hair shorter, it also keeps the Greek look going. I wanted to make it look like underwater hair, to fit the whole pirate theme. But it also has a fire-y flare, looking like flames. Which also fits the theme, symbolism and her nature. I also decided to tone down the red makeup, which was referenced from Chinese makeup.

Decided to give Jaakko a more expressive cartoon-like look as well. And a scar across his cheek to give him a rougher look, as he is a sea warrior.

For Jianquo, I've made him look chubby, cute, wise and sweet. His robes are based off a higher up, Greek leader, also the same with his head jewelry.

Jaw-long looks more like a seasoned warrior now, not quite so evil looking. Just rough and maybe mean. I tired to base his looks off a more European look like German. So give him a eerie look compared to everyone else.

Part 3. Rough.

Key frames of one of my ideas for Zed.

Decided to go with this movement instead, putting most of the emphasis on the " Wow!" and will do a head raise on the emphasis in the "Smokes" but that part will mostly rely on Zed's expression.

Rough and very slight cleanup of Zed

2D Animation: Zed (Part 2)

Just a few more practices with Zed. Trying to find an expressive way for her to say her dialogue.

Practice exercise with lip sync with a different sentence:
"Heyyyy. I, like, neeeeed you to save the pelicans"

Summative: Concepts

Early concepts of my protagonist, Mingxia:

The first drawings of character and Transformation. I wanted to use Ancient Greek and Ancient Chinese as a reference for creating my characters and world. I thought in these drawings it didn't show much of the Greek references, and I wanted to base my transformation off a Greek goddess.

The transformation was a bit tricky. I wanted long flow-y hair for a dramatic effect. Thought maybe that it should fade out from her normal hair colour and length. Lighter hair looked more goddess-like, though.

Early concepts of Jaakko. Supporting character and friend of protagonist.

Wanted a friendly yet strong look, as he supports Mingxia a lot.

Early drawing of Supporting character/ antagonist (but you don't find out til the end)
Wanted him to look approachable, sweet, wise and good. Someone you wouldn't expect to turn out to be bad.

Early concepts of Antagonist/ supporting character who you don't realize is good till the end.

Thought the one on the right looked too much like Jafar off Aladdin. And also maybe too much on the evil side for someone who turns out to be good.
Added a beard to make him look more dangerous and rough than evil.

Concepts of setting. Used Ancient Greek and Chinese for the setting and ships. Wanted a even mix. Some buildings referencing one culture more than the other. Just to make it look more vast.
